Mallorca Airport to handle Record Numbers of Passengers in 2014

According to Mallorca Airport’s operator Aena, the airport is expected to handle record numbers of air passengers this year. The number of air passengers flying in and out of Palma de Mallorca’s airport this summer will have increased in by 6.4%, compared to 2013’s summer season. Good news for restaurateurs, shops and car rental operators at Mallorca Airport, who must make up for a less than impressive winter business.

A total capacity of 23 million seats is earmarked for this summer’s surge of tourists. The largest capacities have been set aside towards the Palma to Barcelona and Palma to Düsseldorf routes. The greatest success story for German/Spanish flight connections, Palma to Hamburg, will receive 40% more seat allocation this summer.

Across the Balearic Islands the number of air passengers has risen dramatically. A total capacity of 34 million seats has been allocated for Ibiza and Mallorca Airport this summer, representing a rise of 8.7%.

The good news for passengers doesn’t end here. Three new restaurants have opened their doors to look after passenger’s culinary needs. Costa Coffee, Tapas restaurant Lizzarán and Forn La Mallorquina, a retailer selling traditional Mallorcan bakery products, have all opened branches at Palma’s airport to provide passengers with snacks, tapas and refreshments.

This takes Mallorca Airport’s range of retail and catering businesses to 75 in total, with 36 of them being snack bars, food retailers and restaurants.

It’s a good idea to have a snack and refreshments before setting off in a hire car from Mallorca Airport to one’s summer resort or hotel. The excitement of travel, rising early to get to one’s departure airport and the flight itself can take its toll on drivers’ concentration. A short 30 minute interval at a cafe or tapas bar before departing in a rental car can work wonders to restore flared tempers, tired eyes and children’s moods.
