Marbella is a fantastic place to holiday with the family, no wonder so many people are coming back year after year and eventually buy a holiday home here. There are so many things to do and see - one summer is simply not enough!
Golf and more
Miniature Golf:
Just 20 minutes’ drive from Marbella’s centre golfers of all ages can test their mettle at Fuengirola Adventure Golf, a 19-hole miniature golf course. Water courses through the complex and interacts with the miniature golf in 10 holes out of the total 19, making it a little more challenging than conventional miniature golf courses. The golf complex is visible from the main A7 road and is located between Dunnes Department Store and Wok Director Restaurant, just across the river from the Eroski Shopping Centre and Miramar Beach Hotel resort complex.
Play-Mania:
Children of all ages will adore their time at Marbella Playcentre Galaxia, which boasts mazes and tunnels, 14 thrilling slides, zip wires and air cannons, an enormous outdoor mega slide, a trampoline and places where mums with babies can sit together and chat. Grown-ups have their own area with free Wi-Fi and full service bar. The Playcentre is located in Guadalmina’s commercial centre in San Pedro.
Cable Car Ride:
For those with a head for heights the Teleferico Benalmadena makes for a thrilling mini adventure. The 15-minute cable car ride starts from Benalmadena Costa, a 30 minute drive out of Marbella, and goes all the way up to the summit of Mt. Calamorro. The views over the Costa del Sol shoreline are spectacular. The ride covers 3 kilometres and is essentially a ski gondola only without the snow. The ride takes passengers up to 800 metres above sea level. Families can save money by booking this attraction together with a visit to Tivoli World or Selwo Marina Sealife.
The summit of Mt. Calamorro offers intrepid explorers of all ages a cafeteria and a bird exhibition dedicated to the different species found along the Costa del Sol, such as falcons, owls and eagles. Sturdy shoes are needed for the 2,750 metres of trails that criss-cross this mountain side. Since the cable car company permits bikes onto the cable car gondola, there are typically quite a few mountain bikers heading for the sign-posted bike trails.
To get to the cable car starting point, take the Costa del Sol highway (AP-7) and exit at 222 for Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel. This attraction is open all year, although may sometimes close in January or February, when high winds make it too dangerous to operate the cable car.
Magical Mayhem:
The family fun amusement park Isla Magica Sevilla offers families with children more than 40 different rides, but it’s a bit of a drive to get there, as the park lies 2.5 hours from Marbella. The park covers the original Expo site at Sevilla and is located in the Isla de la Cartuja.
The park is divided into seven different adventure areas based on Spanish history during the 16th century. From bumper cars, pirate caves, water, laser, fire and music shows to mad-cap roller coasters, children’s activities and entertainments for all ages, this park offers it all and your kids will want to go again and again!
Year Round Fun in Marbella
Although some attractions do close in late autumn and remain closed until the following spring, there are always things to do in Marbella.
For those without children it’s easy to pop over from Britain, Germany or France to spend a few days in their holiday home whenever the fancy takes them, but for families with children it can be disappointing to find attractions closed during off peak season, just when it is more affordable for a family of four to stay in hotel resorts or in their own holiday home at the Costa del Sol.
Thankfully, Marbella boasts so many year-round attractions there is never a dull moment - no matter what time of the year families arrive. Even simple pleasures like hiring bikes for the day and going for a leisurely ride along the promenade to Puerto Banus can be turned into a small adventure by stopping off for grilled sardines along the way.
