Andalusia's beautiful Granada province offers something for everybody and often comes as a surprise to Spain visitors who have purchased a holiday home in Marbella or elsewhere at the Costa del Sol, where life centres on beach activities and nightlife.
Granada Province offers an abundance of attractions and things to do, and not just during the summer season. Granada Province in a year-round destination, boasting historic monuments, art galleries, museums and entertainments galore, but also lovely beaches at the Costa Tropical and skiing in the Sierra Nevada.
Granada's top attractions are, of course, the Alhambra palace complex and the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, but there are many other fantastic things to do and see, such as the Science Park, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Royal Chapel Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the charming Federico Garcia Lorca House or the Museum of the Casa de los Tiros for example.
Granada Science Park
For temporary and permanent residents of the Granada province, one trip to the Science Park is usually not enough to discover all of the park's fantastic exhibits.
Designed as an interactive experience for all ages, the park consists of a science museum, an educational venue focusing on Earth's physical phenomena such as gravity, light, sound, flight, magnetism and our planet's rotation. The museum helps visitors to understand the world humans occupy and combines education with fun in its interactive displays.
The Science Park is divided into several different areas, some of which deal with the universe surrounding our planet, while others focus on individual biospheres needed for the survival of particular species, such as humans, birds or fish. There is also a planetarium and astronomical observatory.
There is so much to see that one day trip is rarely enough to satisfy the curiosity of young scientists, especially after visiting the Explore Room, which allows young minds (and hands) to play with more than 20 different science exhibits.
In addition, there are tropical butterfly gardens, a giant chess board and water games. The piece de resistance is the park's 50 meter tall observation tower, which affords visitors splendid views of Granada City and the Alhambra.
The Science Park can be reached by taking bus number S5, disembarking at bus stop "Parque de las Ciencias" in Avda. del Mediterraneo s/n. With a City Pass or Tourist Card a trip to the Science Park and other tourist attraction can cost up to 30% less, and discounts also apply to bus fares across Granada City.
Visiting the Museum of Sacromonte
Troglodytes of all ages will love to explore the man-made caves at the Museum of Sacromonte, which are more than 100 years old. The museum and caves enjoy a spectacular setting with views of the Alhambra palace, the Darro River Valley, Albaicin and Scaromonte districts. There are ten cave reconstructions here, which document and demonstrate the lives of the Sacromonte people, who used to inhabit such caves.
The museum not only displays some of the tools the cave dwellers used, but also what flora and fauna is unique to this area and how the climate and natural landscape influenced a mostly agricultural local economy.
Leaving from Plaza Nueva by bus C2 for the "Sacromonte 2" stop, it's easy to reach the museum from Granada City centre. The museum is also used as a venue for flamenco shows during summer, so it's worth looking out for the museum's events calendar. The museum is located at Barranco de los Negros s/n, 18010 Granada, tel: 958 215 120.
Treasures Hunting at the Royal Chapel Museum
Located at the Plaza de la Lonja, Gran Via 5 in the offices of the sacristy, the Royal Chapel Museum is a much overlooked gem of a place. When Spain's catholic royalty founded the chapel, they ensured that some of their most precious personal possessions should find a permanent home here.
There are treasures like sceptre and crowns, swords and jewellery, but also deeply personal items like the Queen's treasure chest and mirror, small curios and intimate day-to-day items like prayer books. Bus service LAC takes visitors to the Gran Via 1 stop, the nearest one to the museum.
